In the moving industry, both parties accept some responsibility for the items that are being moved. You are accepting the fact that your belongings are being moved and that damage could occur. As professional movers, of course, we will do everything possible to prevent any damage to your belongings. However, it is inevitable that accidents do happen and sometimes things get damaged during the moving process. With that in mind, the DOT has made it so the movers are responsible for $0.60 per pound, per item.

Included in every move free of charge, is the DOT mandated coverage of $0.60 per pound, per item. As well as $50,000 of cargo coverage.

What All This Means:

During transportation, your belongings are covered up to $50,000 while on the truck on the way to your new home. For example; If the truck were involved in an accident on the way to your new home, you would be covered up to $50,000 at no additional cost to you. Additional coverage can be purchased at time of booking.

Also, that the Department of Transportation has concluded that the moving company is only liable for $0.60 per pound per item. This leaves you as the customer/homeowner with significant exposure and potential for loss. This standard coverage release was set forth by the DOT to offset the huge amount of liability that a moving company faces while handling an entire household of belongings.

THIS IS IMPORTANT: IF YOUR $2,500 TV ONLY WEIGHS 50 POUNDS, YOU WILL RECEIVE $30 FOR ANY DAMAGE THAT OCCURRED TO SAID TV DURING THE MOVE. Full Value Replacement coverage must be purchased at least 3 days prior to your move date if you wish to have your TV covered for its full value.

Essentially, it is up to the shipper (you, the homeowner) to properly insure all items. Movers move normal/typical household items. So when you have something out of the ordinary, it is your responsibility to insure it or it will not be covered under the DOT mandate.

It is commonly assumed that full coverage is included when you hire a licensed, bonded & insured moving company. However, this only means that we carry sufficient general liability, auto and cargo coverage that the Department of Transportation requires.

If you are renting your own truck/trailer and hire NewView Moving to load your belongings into said truck/trailer. You must purchase SIT (shipment in transit) coverage for your belongings to be covered. NewView’s valuation does not cover any items that are not in our care or custody after being loaded into your truck/trailer.

You are not obligated to purchase full value protection when you move. Any and all claim damages will be settled at the valuation of $0.60 per pound per item. All claims are handled by an independent third-party company. NewView Moving does not handle/process any claims. This ensures a fair and transparent settlement process providing an ethical solution for all parties involved.

Your choices are to accept the standard coverage of $0.60 per pound, per item. Or you can contact Relocation Specialists at (888) 893-8835 and purchase Full Value Protection coverage for all your belongings at an additional fee.

Although not covered under the basic valuation. All of the items listed above can be insured/covered through a third party insurance company like MovingInsurance.com, if they are packed by a certified packing company.

The following items are NEVER covered by the mover and most of the time not by any third party moving insurance provider.
