Moving house is always an exciting time in anybody's life. It’s a transitional period, full of new changes and fresh starts- however, one thing that is perhaps the most stressful part of the experience is preparing to move house and ensuring that the whole process is smooth and organised- from start to finish. There are a lot of things to take into consideration when you’re preparing to move house, and amongst the plethora of paperwork, house viewings, legal fees and the packing itself- it's understandable that the process of moving house isn’t always one that goes smooth sailing. However, there are plenty of ways to stay organised and ensure that when moving it isn't always a stressful experience. Here at We Buy Any Home we have compiled our top tips to help ensure that your moving process is nothing other than a smooth transition.

Confirm the Moving Date:

If you’re in the process of moving house, then you will legally have to exchange contracts with the current owners of the home you are moving into. Following this, you will receive a completion date- which will inform you of when you can move into the property. It's important to confirm this as this is the time frame you will be working towards and should ideally have everything ready before this point.

Make Living Arrangements:

If you can time your move in and handover day perfectly, then the actual move itself should be easy enough. However, sometimes it's not always that simple, and you may find yourself stick in between places while you move. If this is the case, then you will have to organise alternative living arrangements- which may take some time. It's better to have this set-in place if you feel as though things aren't going to be a direct process- as this can save you the issue of essentially being homeless for a period of time.

Make a Pre-Moving in List:

Before the move in date arrives, make a list of things you need to do prior to the big day. This may not concern things such as packing, but the smaller things which are equally as important and can massively impact the move day. A few things to consider are things such as moving company , supplies for moving such as boxes and labels, or a plan of action once you get to your new property.

Declutter:

Before you move into your new house, it’s a perfect time to declutter so that everything in your new house consists of only essential things that you need, and you can have your new home in the best condition possible. Not only this, but decluttering is a great way to make the packing process easier as you won't be transporting unnecessary items and will make the move itself a stress-free day.

Keep Your Paperwork At Hand:

While in the midst of packing, you may forget what needs to be kept separately. Keep all important documents such as passports, house deeds, will and insurance papers somewhere accessible and safe. Apply the same rule for any documents or paperwork relating to the move itself, as you may need proof for the moving company, move in date or passwords for alarm systems to be easily accessible. You don’t want important paperwork to get lost or boxed up with the wrong things.

Organise Utilities:

Ensure to make sure the small things are organised before you leave. Ensure you have utilities set up at your new place such as gas, electricity and water- and as for your current property, take evidence of meter readings in case of a dispute once you leave the premises. Smaller yet equally important things such as WIFI and broadband are good things to have set up in your new home, as then you can will have communication when you move in.

Take Time to Clean:

Before you move into your new property, take time to go and clean it. This will make the move-in day itself a lot easier, as you won't have to worry about cleaning while you unpack. It can make all the difference to your stress levels, and having time to assess your home a little earlier means that you can make sure there are no surprises when you move in- and can start unpacking furniture and clothes immediately.

Additionally, take time to thoroughly clean your current property. Not only will this be a kind thing to do for the next homeowners (if someone is moving in), but it also gives you the opportunity to have one last deep clean and search around the house for things that may have been misplaced while you were living there.

Create a Packing Strategy:

You may think that packing can be done quickly and easily. And while there may be truth in that, if you want your packing to be done well, then you need to create a plan on how exactly you are going to pack. Although you may have decluttered, there will inevitably still be a lot of things which need to be boxed up, and the first thing to do is ensure you have the right packing equipment. Start by buying quality packing materials, enough boxes, protective wrapping, labels and stationery. This will help keep your belongings secure while also maintaining a level of organisation. Following this, ensure to pack room by room- perhaps with the room you use the least or has the biggest items. If you label each box as they are done, when it comes to unloading you can simply place the box in its designated room.
